‘Michael’s work just captures the mood of the person in a very clever way with an exactness of their body language.’

Carolyn Miller - Artist.

Life as a Visual Artist in Rural Mid- Wales and Shropshire.

On the flip side of materialistic, I like to think that I aim to find the soul in people, landscapes and objects that I encounter and I suppose that I am always in search of the psychological virtues of energy, calm, contrasts, harmony and dignity in an environment or space.

A mix of comedy, animation and playing with visual elements is alwsys central to my work and does keep my outlook largely youthful and positive.

I like to think that my drawing and painting is authentic to myself and is both free and skillful. This method works well for me and allows my artwork to retain a lively, fun, refreshing and convincing quality.

Mihangel is my adopted artist name so as to make my artwork more easy to find…….it is the Welsh word for, ‘Michael’ and I, Michael Mihangel, was brought up in North East England and I am now living in Mid- Wales.

I inherited a wonderfully wealthy passion for drawing and painting at a young age from family members, in particular my Mother who was immensely creative and musical with perfect pitch and the ability to identify musical notes and chord sequences after hearing them on the spot.

I had a happy upbringing on the brim of the North Yorkshire Moors before moving on to study a Fine Art Degree in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District.

During the past 24 years I have been living in beautiful rural Powys in Wales and have had the privilege of working as an art teacher as well as establishing my own practice as an artist and illustrator.

I now class Wales as my home, although no matter where I am, I am drawn to visually respond to the environments that I encounter and the characters that occupy them, although i must admit some places have a stronger attraction than others. A bit like Edgar Degas who found drawing and painting outside the Parisian cultural scene a little painful.

Drawn Collective is a fabulous group of artists based around Shrewsbury and I am a very happy member of the delightfully creative and supportive unit.

My tastes are wide and varied and I am enormously interested in philosophy, civilization, culture and and I am particularly fond of The Impressionists, Toulouse Lautrec and most of the modern art that followed them up to the current day.

I love the philosophy of Heideger and his thoughts on the importance on the State of Being where we celebrate all that is living with us in the universe at any time such as animals, birds, insects, flowers, trees, weather…….

Also I like Hegels proposal that there is no Art for Art Sake, but Art has a purpose in the sensuous presentation of ideas……important insights can become powerful and helpful in our lives.

‘Life is short so keep smiling, be kind and always try to be helpful….. and forever be a free spirit.’

Michael Mihangel. October 2025.

‘‘I am compelled to draw and paint particularly from observation purely from a point of fascination. Every living thing is entitled to be celebrated in its existence, in that moment, and in that environment. The natural world deserves our empathy, sensory attention and imagination with a shameless generosity and accuracy.’’
